At times the performances seem unrehearsed and improvised, something that suits the story well. They really do have a great relationship on screen, and Huston himself gives a strong performance as we see his descent into an all consuming jealousy. Houston's character is now well to do and very successful but Rohm's character is very unfulfilled. This is 100% Genuine product. The story seeks to unpack the complex relationship between sex and love, and in it, Tolstoy makes a number of arguments about intimacy that were considered shocking in the context of nineteenth-century morals and mores. She longs to renew her career as a pianist and she starts to tutor a young violinist. .

Filmstalker Review: The Kreutzer Sonata

the kreutzer sonata 2008 uk

The film is perhaps 5 minutes over-long, but the two central performances from Danny Huston and Elizabeth Rohm carry it. They continue an affair and eventually realise that they should be together. There are a few bumpy moments on the way, and the character does take a bit of a leap, but for the most part the journey is both interesting and identifiable with. Featuring bold, brilliant and utterly compelling performances from Elisabeth Rohm as the beautiful and talented pianist Abigail, and Danny Huston, as the wealthy philanthropist and enraged husband Edgar, who is consumed by feelings of carnal desire and violent jealousy, The Kreutzer Sonata explores the rich complexities of love, sex, obsession and paranoia in a raw, emotionally and sexually charged thriller. The title novella in this collection of stories from literary master Leo Tolstoy, The Kreutzer Sonata, unleashed a firestorm of controversy upon its original publication.

Sex Occasional scenes of strong aggressive sex occur, including a sequence in which a man wraps a belt around a woman's throat during sex. The film is adapted from Leo Tolstoy novel of the same name which itself was inspired by the music of Ludwig Van Beethoven's sonata, and tells the story of Edgar Hudson and his relationship with Abby, a woman whom he meets at a party and is destined to become his wife. La Sonata à Kreutzer is a 16mm film based on a Tolstoy story and was written and directed by Eric Rohmer and produced by Jean-Luc Godard. I was surprised at how well the story was structured and that I enjoyed watching the character's descent as well as the way the film portrays the relationships and plays out the story. Together with his estranged wife, he will stop at nothing to unravel the mystery and find their son—and, in doing so, he unearths a legend that refuses to remain buried in the past. I thought it had a good story, great music, great acting, and was thoroughly enjoyable.

The Kreutzer Sonata: Film review

the kreutzer sonata 2008 uk

The film follows a man Rohmer whose wife starts to fall for a another man Jean-Claude Brialy. A vast improvement from Snuff-Movie. Tolstoy's timeless themes are given new life by Rose, who unravels the rich complexities of love, sex, obsession and paranoia in a raw, emotionally and sexually charged thriller. It does fall into cheap horror and slapstick for a moment which seems totally at odds with the rest of the film and severely lessens the final impact. The ending did leave a little to be desired. It is Rose's second collaboration with after and his third adaptation of a work by Tolstoy, following 1997's and 2003's. The male protagonist is also shown masturbating to violent pornography in which a woman is forcibly stripped, shouted at and, it is suggested, has her head flushed down a toilet.

I really liked this movie. Elizabeth Rohm is outstanding as a promising musician who gets involved with Houston and ends up unexpectedly getting pregnant. Danny Houston is very good in his role of a many who seduced and married a young women, had two children and now is extremely jealous of his young wife, suspecting she is having an affair. Although the character's descent is portrayed well for the most part and is interesting to watch, there are a few moments where it leaps forwards, particularly when he goes into the phase of the film where he shifts from jealousy to rage and full paranoia. It has a very lose feel to the filming as the camera seems to be mostly hand held and taking natural frames, never trying to overpower the story, rather just observe it.

It was in reference to this film when Truffaut called Rohmer the master of 16mm. This sets the stage for suspicions and the story follows along that theme. This begins to fuel Edgar's jealousy and concern, believing that she is bored with her life and will start to look for some excitement. He arranges a party to raise funds and awareness for a charity he's sponsoring, and she is to play The Kreutzer Sonata with a talented, good looking, and much younger violinist, and so his jealousy grows and grows. Secret Bases • The Kreutzer Sonata (2008 film)

The second of five Tolstoy adaptations to date by acclaimed British director Bernard Rose Candyman, Mr. It's not fantastic, but it is a lot better and would be hard to identify this as the same director. Huston provides a voice over throughout for his character, and while most creatives in film would say that the voice-over is a tool of the lazy writer, it does work well here and gives us a good insight into the mind of the character, taking us along with his journey, and helping us understand his descent. A terrific cameo performance, by Matthew Jacobs playing a really annoying chauffeur, forshadows the same director's equally fine Boxing Day, also based on Tolstoy. Violence A scene of stabbing results in some strong bloody imagery. This is great British film-making.
